Giselle had become a former garment factory migrant worker, Albrecht, a member of the wealthy factory-owning class. Akram Khan’s Giselle Story Act I While the Giselle story ballet (1841) traditionally takes place in Germany, following a group of peasants during autumn harvest, Khan’s Giselle lives among dispossessed migrant workers – labelled as ‘the Outcasts’ in the English National Ballet’s Act I synopsis. Giselle is one of a community of migrant garment factory workers (the Outcasts). Dispossessed of their jobs by the factory’s closure, and separated by a high Khan, a British dancer of Bangladeshi descent, is not a ballet choreographer.
